New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on the Madhya Pradesh government over the delay in granting sanction to prosecute state minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his controversial remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had earlier briefed the media during Operation Sindoor.
A bench of the apex court expressed strong displeasure over the State government’s inaction, observing that the matter could not be kept pending indefinitely. “Enough is enough,” the court remarked while questioning why no final decision had been taken despite the seriousness of the allegations.
The controversy stems from comments allegedly made by Vijay Shah against Col Sofiya Qureshi, a respected Indian Army officer who became widely known after addressing the media during the military operation. His remarks had triggered criticism from opposition parties, retired defence personnel and civil society groups, with many demanding strict action against the minister.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court asked the Madhya Pradesh government to explain the delay in processing sanction for prosecution. The bench noted that public officials must be held accountable for statements that could undermine the dignity of serving officers and institutions.
The court’s sharp observations have intensified political pressure on the BJP-led government in Madhya Pradesh. Opposition leaders accused the State administration of protecting the minister instead of acting swiftly in the matter.
The case has also sparked a larger debate over political accountability and the treatment of women officers in the armed forces. Several veterans and commentators have backed Col Sofiya Qureshi, calling for respect towards members of the military irrespective of political differences.
The Supreme Court is expected to continue monitoring the matter as the State government prepares to respond on the issue of prosecution sanction.
