Five IAF Personnel Killed as AN-32 Aircraft Crashes During Landing in Assam

Jorhat, Assam: In one of the deadliest Indian Air Force (IAF) accidents in recent months, an Antonov AN-32 transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at the Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam, during a routine sortie on June 13.

According to officials, the aircraft caught fire shortly after the crash. Five IAF personnel on board lost their lives, while the co-pilot survived the accident and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

The deceased have been identified as..

  • Squadron Leader Prashant Singh,
  • Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar,
  • Sergeant Jitendra Sharma,
  • Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and
  • Agniveervayu Danish Alam.

The exact cause of the crash remains unknown. The Indian Air Force has ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the ageing AN-32 transport fleet, which has been serving the Indian Air Force for decades and has previously been at the centre of concerns over operational safety and maintenance.
