Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Traffic Police have booked a 59-year-old man for allegedly using a tampered vehicle registration number plate to avoid traffic challans, leading to legal action against him.
According to police, Khanchandani Balram, a resident of Himayathnagar, altered the registration number of his Honda Activa from AP09CH9428 to AP09CM9428. The modification allegedly enabled him to evade penalties for traffic violations, while the challans were incorrectly issued to the genuine owner of vehicle number AP09CM9428.
Following an investigation, the Traffic Police confirmed the misuse and referred the case to Sultan Bazar Police. An FIR was subsequently registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with Section 80(a) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police officials stated that strict legal action has been initiated against the accused. They also warned motorists against using fake or tampered number plates, emphasizing that such offences are punishable under the law.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police further noted that violations of this nature are increasingly being detected through the city’s extensive network of CCTV cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, which help identify offenders and prevent fraudulent practices on the roads.
