New Delhi, July 13: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Madras High Court’s directive requiring the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that no cow or calf is slaughtered in the state on Bakrid or any other day, observing that the order required “correction.”

The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, had challenged the High Court’s May 27 order through a Special Leave Petition. The state argued that the directive was contrary to the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act, which permits the slaughter of certain categories of cattle under specified conditions and at designated facilities.

The Madras High Court had directed the state to enforce a 1976 government order aimed at prohibiting cow slaughter to promote milk production and strengthen the rural economy. The judgment, delivered by a Division Bench, also cited Article 48 of the Constitution, which encourages the State to prohibit the slaughter of cows, calves, and other milch and draught cattle.

While staying the High Court’s order, the Supreme Court will continue hearing the matter.

The Tamil Nadu government has maintained that existing laws already regulate the slaughter of animals through licensed slaughterhouses and other statutory provisions, without imposing a blanket ban. The issue has also drawn attention due to traditional animal sacrifice practices observed during Bakrid and certain Hindu temple festivals, with community representatives arguing that restricting such activities solely to licensed slaughterhouses is not always practical because of limited capacity during festival periods.
