New Delhi: According to sources on Monday, investigators will issue a notice to the Congress’ Telangana unit regarding a manipulated video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In the video, Shah’s statement indicating a commitment to abolishing reservation quotas for Muslims in Telangana was altered to suggest he advocated scrapping all reservations. A team from the Delhi Police will travel to Telangana to serve the notice to individuals who shared the fake video, including INC Telangana, who posted it on X (formerly Twitter).
“The matter is under investigation. We are trying to trace the origin of the video, and those who shared it will be questioned, and notices will be served to participate in the probe,” the sources stated.
The Delhi Police registered a case on the edited video being widely circulating on social media platforms after complaints by the BJP and the Home Ministry. In the altered video, the Home Minister was seen advocating for the abolition of reservation quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
This action follows the registration of an FIR by Delhi Police on Sunday, prompted by complaints from the BJP and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The FIR was filed by the Delhi Police Special Cell Cyber Wing’s IFSO unit under Sections 153, 153A, 465, 469, and 171G of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66C of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The FIR, obtained by IANS, mentions that the MHA complained about “some doctored videos being circulated by users of Facebook and Twitter.” The ministry highlighted that these videos aimed to spread misleading information, potentially leading to disharmony among communities and affecting public tranquillity and order. The ministry also provided a report with details of links and handles sharing the manipulated videos of the Home Minister.
