Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops located near educational institutions and places of worship across the state.
The decision comes as part of the state government’s move to regulate the operation of liquor outlets and address public concerns over the presence of alcohol shops close to schools, colleges, temples, mosques, churches, and other sensitive areas.
Officials said the identified TASMAC outlets were found operating within restricted zones near educational and religious institutions. The government has directed authorities to begin the closure process and relocate eligible outlets in accordance with existing rules and regulations.
The move is expected to impact several districts across Tamil Nadu, where residents and social organisations had repeatedly raised complaints about liquor shops functioning near schools and places of worship.
The Tamil Nadu government stated that the action was aimed at protecting students and maintaining the sanctity of religious spaces, while also ensuring stricter enforcement of liquor sale norms in the state.
Further details regarding the timeline for closures and relocation of the affected TASMAC shops are expected to be announced by the authorities soon.
