Telangana Govt Takes Over Hyderabad Metro for ₹1,461 Crore

Hyderabad, April 29: In a major move, the Telangana government has taken full control of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase I by acquiring it from Larsen & Toubro for ₹1,461 crore.

The state signed a share purchase agreement to acquire 100% equity in L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL), which has been operating the metro since 2017. The deal was executed through Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).

As part of the takeover, a massive debt of ₹13,538.53 crore—previously backed by L&T—will now be refinanced with a guarantee from the state government, easing the financial structure of the project.

The agreement was signed in the presence of top officials, including Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and senior executives from L&T and LTMRHL.

The metro network, spread across three corridors covering 69 km, currently serves around 4.5 lakh passengers daily and has recorded nearly 86 crore trips since its launch in November 2017.

Officials say this takeover will help align Phase I with the upcoming Phase II expansion, ensuring smoother planning, better coordination, and improved services for commuters.

In short: Hyderabad’s Metro is now fully in the government’s hands—aiming for a more connected and commuter-friendly future. 🚆
