Jakarta: The government of Indonesia has announced a ban on social media access for children under the age of 16, in a move aimed at protecting minors from online threats and harmful digital content.
The new regulation will restrict children below 16 from creating or using accounts on popular platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and X. Authorities say the policy is intended to safeguard young users from risks including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, online fraud, and digital addiction.
Officials stated that technology companies will be required to implement stricter age-verification systems and ensure compliance with the new rules. Accounts found to belong to underage users may be removed or restricted under the regulation.
The government said the decision reflects growing global concerns over children’s safety in the digital space and the impact of excessive social media use on mental health and development.
With this step, Indonesia becomes one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to introduce strict restrictions on social media access for minors.
