Four Indian Students Injured in Knife Attack at Russian University

New Delhi: Four Indian students were among several people injured in a knife attack at the State Medical University in Ufa, Russia, the Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed on X.

According to preliminary reports, a teenager armed with a knife entered the university premises and attacked students. Local media said the incident took place at the sports hall of a foreign students’ hostel in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic.

The Indian Embassy said it is in close contact with Russian authorities and that officials from the Consulate General of India in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to assist the injured students.

“An unfortunate incident of attack has occurred in Ufa. Several persons, including four Indian students, have been injured,” the embassy said in its statement.

Russia’s Interior Ministry spokesperson, Major General Irina Volk, told news website RTVI that the attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were also stabbed. She added that the suspect later inflicted injuries on himself.

Local reports have speculated that there may have been two attackers. According to Russian Telegram channels, one suspect, a 15-year-old teenager, has been hospitalised and is said to be in serious condition.

Russia remains a popular destination for Indian students, particularly for medical education. Before the Russia-Ukraine conflict, many Indian students also travelled to Ukraine to pursue medical studies.
