50 Indian Diplomats Evacuated as Taliban Advances in 85% of Afghanistan

New Delhi: According to sources, India has pulled out around 50 diplomats and security personnel from the Kandahar consulate and other staff members because of the Taliban fighters rapidly seizing the key areas in Afghanistan triggering security concerns.

Earlier, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was carefully monitoring the failing security situation and its implications on the safety and security of Indian nationals in Afghanistan.

“Our response will be calibrated accordingly,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing on Thursday.

The US is in the process of complete withdrawal by August-end of its forces from Afghanistan, after nearly 20 years of its military presence in Afghanistan.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Indian embassy in Kabul said there was no plan to close the consulates in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif.

India has been a major stakeholder in peace and stability and has already invested nearly USD three billion in aid and reconstruction activities in Afghanistan.

The Taliban claimed on Friday that they are now controlling 85% of Afghanistan’s territory as American troops complete their pullout from the war-battered country.
