From Auto to Action: Driver Turns Hero, Stops Chain Snatching in Daring Chase

Hyderabad: In a remarkable display of courage, an auto driver in Hyderabad risked his life to stop a chain-snatching attempt, earning praise and recognition from the city police.

The incident took place on March 4 in the Begum Bazaar–Jinsee Chowrasta area when a woman, Manju Omlata, was out for a morning walk with her daughter-in-law. Near a local school, a rowdy sheeter identified as Mohammad Sohail allegedly tried to snatch her gold chain. During the attempt, the accused lost control of his scooter and fell.

Hearing the victim’s cries, auto driver Mohammad Zaheer, who had already driven past the spot, noticed the commotion through his mirror. Without hesitation, he reversed his auto and rammed it into the आरोपी’s vehicle as he tried to escape, knocking him down.

Despite being attacked with a stick, Zaheer stood his ground and prevented the आरोपी from fleeing until patrolling police arrived and took him into custody. Notably, Zaheer left the scene quietly after the incident, without seeking any recognition.

The entire act of bravery was captured on CCTV cameras. Based on the footage, police traced the auto driver using the vehicle number and identified him.

Recognising his bravery, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar honoured Zaheer at the TGICCC in Banjara Hills on Tuesday. He was presented with a cash reward and a commendation letter.

Praising his courage, Sajjanar said Zaheer’s actions set an example for society. He noted that in times when bystanders often hesitate to act, such bravery reflects a strong sense of civic responsibility. He also urged citizens to respond fearlessly in such situations and immediately inform police by dialling 100.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered at Goshamahal Police Station against the आरोपी, who reportedly has multiple cases registered against him. Officials said he has around 16 prior cases across different police stations.

Senior officers, including DCP G. Chandra Mohan and SHO Shrawan Kumar, were present during the felicitation ceremony.
