Australia Suspends Passenger Flights from India until May 15

Australia on Tuesday suspended all direct passenger flights from India with immediate effect until May 15 due to the “very significant” spike in COVID-19 cases.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announcing the flight suspension also launched an immediate support package for India in its fight against the critical wave of Covid-9 cases.

Scott Morrison was addressing a press briefing said that the suspension on arrivals from India would be reviewed before May 15.

“We recognize that this has been a very significant outbreak in India,” Morrison said.

The travel suspension could also affect thousands of people, including Australian cricketers currently playing in the Indian Premier League in India.

All indirect flights coming from India via Singapore, Doha, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur have also been suspended by their respective governments.

Minister Morrison said that Australia will send critical shortage of medical supplies including 500 ventilators, as well as 1 million surgical masks, 500,000 protective and surgical masks, goggles and face shields.
