Srinagar: A major security scare unfolded after a man allegedly attempted to fire at National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, but the weapon reportedly failed to discharge, allowing the veteran politician to escape unharmed.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect tried to pull the trigger while targeting Abdullah during a public interaction. However, the gun malfunctioned, preventing the shot from being fired. Security personnel immediately intervened and overpowered the man before he could attempt another attack.
Officials said the incident caused brief panic at the venue, but the situation was quickly brought under control. Abdullah was escorted to safety by his security team and is reported to be safe.
Authorities have taken the suspect into custody and launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attempted attack. Security agencies are also examining how the individual managed to get close to the senior leader despite security arrangements.
Farooq Abdullah, a senior leader from Jammu and Kashmir and a prominent voice in regional politics, has served multiple terms as the Chief Minister of the former state.
