New Delhi: In a major security development, Indian authorities have arrested an American citizen along with six Ukrainian nationals under the country’s stringent anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The arrests were carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing alleged links between the foreign nationals and activities considered a threat to India’s national security.
Who are the accused?
The American national has been identified as Matthew VanDyke. Alongside him, six Ukrainian citizens were also detained as part of the same operation. Authorities believe the group may have been operating as part of a coordinated network.
What are the allegations?
According to officials, the accused are suspected of:
- Providing military-style and drone warfare training
- Establishing links with armed ethnic groups in Myanmar
- Potentially supporting organizations that could have spillover security implications for India
Investigators are examining whether these activities were connected to insurgent networks operating in regions bordering India.
Legal action and custody
The accused were produced before a court in Delhi, which remanded them to NIA custody for further interrogation. Officials say the custody period will be used to uncover the full extent of the alleged network, including funding sources and international connections.
