Hyderabad: The Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) on Tuesday organized a joint protest rally in Hyderabad opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the exercise could lead to the deletion of genuine voters from the electoral rolls.
Leaders of the participating parties claimed that the voter enumeration process was being used as a “vote theft” mechanism and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission (EC) of attempting to disenfranchise eligible voters.
The protesters alleged that the SIR exercise was part of a larger conspiracy to deprive citizens of their constitutional right to vote, which they described as the cornerstone of India’s democratic system. They said any attempt to weaken voting rights would be strongly opposed by democratic and secular forces.
Party leaders expressed concern that marginalized communities, including the poor, weaker sections, tribal groups, Dalits, and backward classes, could be disproportionately affected if eligible voters were removed from the electoral rolls. They argued that such actions would amount to an attack on democracy.
The rally commenced at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue on Tank Bund and proceeded towards BRK Bhavan, where the participants raised slogans against the electoral revision exercise.
Leaders also announced that they would submit a formal representation to the Election Commission, seeking transparency in the revision process and safeguards against the unconstitutional deletion of voters.
Meanwhile, the house-to-house enumeration process under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana is scheduled to be conducted from June 25 to July 24.
