A deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in California left five people dead on Monday, including three victims and two suspected gunmen, according to local authorities.
San Diego Police said the attack took place shortly before noon at the mosque complex in the Clairemont area. Officers responding to reports of an active shooter found three adult men shot dead outside the Islamic center, including a security guard who officials believe helped prevent even greater loss of life.
Police later discovered two teenage suspects, aged 17 and 19, dead inside a nearby vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Authorities are treating the incident as a possible hate crime and the FBI has joined the investigation.
The Islamic Center of San Diego, one of the largest mosques in the region, also houses a school for children. Officials confirmed that all children present at the campus during the shooting were safely evacuated and no students were injured.
Police Chief Scott Wahl described the scene as “extremely chaotic” and said investigators are still piecing together the sequence of events and motive behind the attack. Reports indicate anti-Islamic writings may have been recovered during the investigation, though authorities have not yet released full details publicly.
The shooting shocked the local Muslim community and prompted reactions from state and federal officials, who condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.
