A significant revelation emerged in a special MP/MLA court, where the grandnephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar stated that the freedom-era figure had filed five mercy petitions with the British colonial government during his imprisonment.
According to the testimony, Savarkar not only sought clemency through multiple petitions but had also appealed for the recruitment of Indians into the British Army during the period of World War II.
The statement was made under oath as part of ongoing proceedings in the special court, adding to the long-standing historical and political debate surrounding Savarkar’s role during India’s freedom struggle.
Savarkar, a prominent proponent of Hindutva ideology, remains a polarizing figure in Indian history. While some regard him as a nationalist and revolutionary, others have criticized his actions during incarceration under British rule.
The court is currently examining related matters, and further hearings are expected to shed more light on the claims and their historical context.
