Government to Decide on Permanent Vehicle Registration at Showrooms Instead at RTA

Hyderabad: The Transport Department is exploring the possibility of enabling vehicle registrations directly at showrooms upon purchase, aiming to streamline the process and reduce queues at Regional Transport Authority (RTA) offices. Inspired by the successful implementation in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, officials are studying the procedures for potential adoption.

Details of vehicle showrooms and their sales are being collected, along with an evaluation of the technical requirements for showroom-based permanent registrations. Currently, only Temporary Registrations (TR) are issued at showrooms, but if Permanent Registrations (PR) follow suit, motorists could receive PR smart cards along with their vehicles.

The proposal awaits government approval and may gain traction after the Lok Sabha elections. This move aligns with Central Government provisions in the Road Safety Act, with guidelines introduced in 2016. While many states have implemented showroom registrations, Telangana still follows the traditional TR-PR process.

If adopted, vehicles in Telangana would receive High-Security number plates and PR smart cards at showrooms, potentially easing the burden on RTA offices, where hundreds of registrations occur daily. This could also mitigate reliance on agents for online slot registration, reducing illegal activities.
