A tragic road accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district claimed the lives of 13 people and left at least 20 others injured on Monday after a tempo carrying guests to an engagement ceremony collided with a speeding container trailer.

According to officials, the accident occurred near Dhaniwari village when the trailer, bearing registration number NL 01 AC 9118, reportedly lost control while coming from the opposite direction. The container box rammed violently into the left side of the tempo, causing a massive pile-up. A motorcycle travelling nearby was also caught in the collision.

Police said the impact was so severe that both the tempo and the trailer overturned on the highway, trapping several passengers underneath the mangled vehicles. Emergency response teams, local residents, and police personnel rushed to the scene to rescue victims and clear traffic on the busy stretch.

Officials confirmed that 13 people either died on the spot or succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospitals. The deceased were identified as Suresh Ratna Lakhat, Pandu Ganpat Lakhat, Kalu Govind Lakhat, Sunil Arjun Dandekar, Chima Govind Kurhada, Namita Vitthal Dandekar, Sarika Santosh Lakhat, Ayush Sitaram Lakhat, Sagar Namdev Shende, Vandana Shivram Valvi, Saloni Shivram Valvi, Ajay Ahadi, and Riyanshi Santosh Lakhat.

Fourteen injured passengers were shifted to Vedanta Hospital in Dahanu for intensive treatment, while the remaining victims were admitted to Kasa Sub-District Hospital.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the incident and announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of those killed in the crash.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the tempo may have been overloaded with passengers. Police suspect excessive speed, the narrow stretch of the highway, and the trailer driver losing control as the likely reasons behind the accident.

Authorities have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the exact cause of the crash. The district administration has also issued a helpline contact for relatives seeking information about the victims.

What was meant to be a joyful journey for an engagement ceremony turned into a devastating tragedy, leaving several families shattered.
