Turkey to Recognize Taliban Government, Relocated Embassy in Kabul, To Operate Kabul Airport after US Exit – Reports

Ankara: Turkey, a NATO member is reportedly nearing a deal to recognize Afghanistan’s Taliban government and operate the Kabul airport in partnership with Qatar, paving the way for the Taliban government to attract foreign aid and investment.

According to Levent Kemal of the Middle East Eye (MEE), The agreement which includes the Recognition of Taliban, Qatar and Turkey to run the Kabul Airport, Turkish private security firm and Special forces to protect Turks is awaiting approval by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and will be finalized once US exit is completed from Afghanistan.

According to Aljazeera, Turkey’s President Erdogan says the Turkish embassy in Kabul has returned to its building in the city and Ankara will maintain its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan.

The Turkish Embassy in Afghanistan was relocated back to its premises in Kabul after it was temporarily stationed at the Kabul airport, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

“Two weeks ago our embassy was temporarily relocated to the Kabul airport. Yesterday, they [embassy staff] returned to their headquarters in the center of Kabul and resumed their work there. Our plans are to maintain our diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. We are constantly monitoring the development of the security situation and have options ready just in case. Our priority is the safety of our personnel,” Erdogan said as quoted by Turkish NTV broadcaster.
