Sushmita Dev, MP, Mahila Congress Chief Quits Party, Likely to Join Trinamool Congress

New Delhi: Former Congress MP and Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev has resigned from the Congress party today, and is likely to join Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Sushmita Dev changes her Twitter bio to “Former Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. Former Member, Indian National Congress. Former President, All India Mahila Congress.”

Sushmita Dev is the daughter of Seniors Assam Congress leader and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev, she was the chief of the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress.

Sushmita Dev had earlier been an MP from Silchar in Assam is now in Kolkata to meet with Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. “She will be the face of the Trinamool in Assam if she joins,” said Trinamool Congress sources.

Sushmita sent her resignation to Congress working president Sonia Gandhi, offering no reason for quitting her party of three decades but talking about a “new chapter of public service”.

The resignation comes two days after Sushmita Dev met congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi along with the newly appointed Assam Congress team in the national capital.
