PTI Challenges New IT Rules in Delhi High Court

New Delhi: Press Trust of India (PTI), India’s largest news agency, has challenged the new IT regulations in Delhi High Court asserting that they deviate from the provisions of the Constitution.

According to The Hindu, PTI in their plea said that the new rules allow the government to “virtually dictate content to digital news portals, and squarely violate media freedom.” It said the Central government was attempting to regulate digital news media.

PTI has challenged the constitutional validity of the rules as it purports to regulate ‘publishers of news and current affairs content, particularly digital news portals, by imposing “sweeping” government oversight and a vaguely worded ‘Code of Ethics’.

A bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice J.R. Midha issued notice to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on the petition.

The New IT Rules were introduced in February 2021, by the Government of India.
