Hyderabad: All 70 Pet Shops operating within the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, and almost all of them are running without obtaining a certificate of registration from the Telangana State Animal Welfare Board and also without obtaining a trade license from the GHMC. And as such, all these shops are operating as pet shops by flouting the animal welfare laws, rules, and guidelines.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development, (MAUD) issues notice to all these shops for applying in required proforma and obtaining requisite registration from State Animal Welfare Board within 4 weeks, failing which any license by GHMC if issued should be cancelled to these shops and all these shops who fail to obtain registration from State Animal Welfare Board should be closed down within 4 weeks.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India has made Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018 and as per the said rules no person shall carry on or continue the business of sale or trade-in pet animals, whether retail or wholesale or establish operate a pet shop, or any other establishment engaged in sale, purchase or exchange of pet animals by whatever name called, without obtaining a certificate of registration from the State Animal Welfare Board and these rules require pet shop owners to ensure general care of animals, veterinary care and other operational requirements. Further, no pet shop shall be granted a license by the local authority, i.e., by GHMC, unless the pet shop has obtained a certificate of registration from the State Board following these rules. The purpose of obtaining this registration from the Animal Welfare Board is to ensure that the business of pet shops is run in a manner that is not cruel or detrimental for the health and safety of animals.
