Bengaluru: A hijab is not an essential religious practice for Muslims, the Karnataka High Court said today in their judgement, It is huge setback for muslims girls students who had challenged a ban on wearing the hijab in class.
It has also said that the prescription of school uniform is lawful and it does not violate right to freedom of speech or right to freedom of privacy of the Constitution.
A three-judge Bench of the High Court of Karnataka, headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice Krishna S. Dixit and Justice J.M. Khazi pronounced its verdict on the petitions related to the row over wearing hijab in educational institutions.
Ahead of the verdict, the Karnataka state government has banned large gatherings for 7 days in Bengaluru “to maintain public peace and order”.
Mangalore too has banned large gatherings from March 15 to 19.
The Udupi district administration has declared a holiday in schools and colleges tomorrow.
