Cleric Ebrahim Raisi Elected Iran’s New President

Tehran: Ebrahim Raisi, an Ultraconservative cleric was declared elected on Saturday of Iran’s presidential election.

Iran’s president is the second-highest-ranking official in the country, after the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has ultimate political power in Iran.

He is fiercely loyal to Iran’s ruling clerics Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and has even been seen as a possible successor to Ayatollah Khamenei as the country’s supreme leader.

Mr. Raisi is Iran’s top judge and holds ultra-conservative views. He served as a prosecutor for most of his career. He was appointed head of the judiciary in 2019.

Raisi, 60, is set to take over at a critical time, as Iran seeks to rescue its tattered nuclear deal with major powers and free itself from US sanctions that have driven a sharp economic downturn.

Mr. Raisi has presented himself as the best person to fight corruption and solve Iran’s economic problems.
