Blocked #ResignModi Hashtag by Mistake, Says Facebook, Restored Later

Facebook on Thursday said it had temporarily blocked a hashtag calling for the Prime Minister’s resignation “by mistake” and that it wasn’t done on government orders.

The posts were “temporarily hidden” for India-based users for ‘violating the website’s Community Standards’.

A hashtag calling for the resignation of PM Narendra Modi on Facebook was blocked for several hours on Wednesday, 28 April, critical of the ruling BJP government, as the second wave of COVID-19 turned into a devastating public health disaster in the country.

Later, Facebook has restored the #ResignModi hashtag, which calls for the resignation of PM Narendra Modi.

Andy Stone, from Facebook communications, clarified

“We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to,”

“This hashtag has been restored and we are looking into what happened.”

While Facebook later restored the hashtag and said that it was removed “by mistake,” the Centre issued a statement saying that no such order was given by it to the social media giant.
