New Delhi: Ashwani Upadhyay, BJP Leader, Supreme Court Lawyer, and 5 Arrested by Delhi Police over Anti-Muslim Slogans
BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay and five others have been taken into police custody and are being questioned in connection with the communal sloganeering near Jantar Mantar on Sunday, Delhi Police sources said on Tuesday.
Apart from Upadhyay, a senior police officer said, the detained men have been identified as Deepak Singh Hindu, Vineet Kranti, Preet Singh amd Vinod Sharma, who is the head of Sudarshan Vahini. “In late-night operation, they all have been detained and now legal documents work is going on before making their arrest. Upadhyay reached Connaught Place police station at around 3 am and joined the investigation,” said a senior police officer.
Earlier, Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay, a lawyer had called for a march on Sunday to demand an end to ‘colonial-era laws’ by setting up a uniform civil code. Another BJP leader, Gajendra Chauhan, was also among the participants in the rally.
In a rally, protestors who raised slogans calling for violence against Muslims were shouted at a rally in Jantar Mantar, less than 2 km from Parliament, and the Delhi Police on Monday filed a first information report against several persons a day after inflammatory slogans.
Communal, inflammatory slogans against Muslims were raised at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday, at a rally that had several leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in attendance.
“Jab Mulle kaate jaayenge, Ram Ram Chillaayenge” (When ‘Mulle’—a derogatory word used for Muslims—would be chopped off, they would cry Ram Ram) and “Hindustan Mein Rehna Hoga, Jai Shri Ram Kehna Hoga (If one must remain in India, they should say ‘Jai Shri Ram’) were among the slangs raised by the mob that participated in the rally.
