Anti-Terror Chargesheet Against Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan for Covering Hathras Gang Rape Case

Lucknow, 04 April: Uttar Pradesh Police submitted a 5,000 pages charge sheet against Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested during coverage of Hathras Rape case.

Siddique Kappan and three others were arrested in October 2020 while travelling from Delhi to Hathras to report on alleged gang-rape and death of a Dalit girl.

Siddique Kappan, others were charged under the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA for alleged conspiracy to create communal tension by UP police.

Mr. Siddique Kappan has since October 2020 been in jail in Mathura.

The UP police handling of the Hathras case was widely criticized for being slow to respond to the gang rape complaint, when she died during treatment in the hospital, police also controversially took away her body, drove to her village and cremated the body in midnight at 2 AM in the absence of her family.

After the controversies, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case and filed a charge sheet against four gang rape accused. That trial is going on in a court in Hathras.
