Video: Death Toll Rises to 92 in Covid-19 Hospital Fire in Nasiriyah, Iraq

Iraq: The death toll from a fire that tore through a coronavirus hospital in southern Iraq rose to 92, health officials said on Tuesday, as authorities faced accusations of negligence from grieving relatives and a doctor who works there.

More than 100 people were injured in the blaze on Monday night in Nassiriya, officials said.

An investigation showed that the fire began when sparks from faulty wiring spread to an oxygen tank that then exploded in a temporary quarantine clinic at Al-Hussein Hospital, police and civil defence authorities said.

Baghdad:  At least 42 people have died and more than 60 people injured in a fire at a Covid-19 isolation center in southern Iraq.

The fire erupted at Imam Al-Hussein Hospital in the Dhi Qar governorate, the capital of Nassiriya.

According to Iraqi health officials “The victims died of burns and the search is continuing,” adding that there were fears victims could still be trapped inside the building. The ward itself has space for 60 patients.

Iraq’s Civil Defense said that the fire was completely under control after authorities evacuated the patients.

Maj. Gen. Kazem Salman Buhan said the hospital is made up of “caravans built with flammable sandwich panels,” adding that he “will soon announce a detailed report on the causes of the fire.”

This is the second deadly blaze in three months in Iraq.
