1307 New Cases Registered in the Different States After Law was Scrapped by Supreme Court in 2015

The Supreme Court struck down Sec 66A of the IT Act in a landmark ruling in March 2015, and described the now-defunct law as “vague”, “unconstitutional” and a “violation of free speech”.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India expressed shock and displeasure on Monday while hearing a plea by NGO and being told the over 1300 cases have been registered under Section 66A of the IT Act, which was scrapped seven years ago by the Supreme Court.

This controversial law Section 66A of the IT Act, that was allowed police to arrest people for posting “offensive” content online.

A three-member bench of Justices R Nariman, KM Joseph, and BR Gavai were shocked and expresses as “It is shocking. We will issue notice,” “Amazing. What is going on is terrible.”

The court has sought a response from the center in two weeks.

NGO in their pleas said that before the scrapping of Sec 66A there were only 229 pending cases. And after scrapping the law 1,307 new cases had been registered, in different states Maharashtra (381), Jharkhand (291), Uttar Pradesh (245) and Rajasthan (192), Andhra Pradesh (38), Assam (59), Delhi, (28), Karnataka (14), Telangana (15), Tamil Nadu (7) and West Bengal (37)
