Delhi Police in Supreme Court against Delhi High Court’s Bail Order to Student-Activists in UAPA Case

New Delhi: The Delhi Police approached the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the Delhi High Court’s Bail order to three student-activists Asif Iqbal Tanha and Pinjra Tod activists Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita who had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Earlier, A division bench of Justices Sidharth Mridul and Anup Jairam Bhambhani of the Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed bail to Asif Iqbal Tanha and Pinjra Tod activists Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case under UAPA.

Justices Siddharth Mridul and Anup Jairam Bhambhani questioned and warned against “foisting extremely grave and serious penal provisions” of the UAPA “frivolously upon people” and noted that “wanton use of serious penal provisions would only trivialise them”.

Narwal and Kalita, Ph.D. scholars at JNU in Delhi, associated with the Pinjra Tod Collective, have also been in custody since May 2020. Recently Narwal was allowed interim bail to attend the last rites of her now-deceased father.

As per Delhi Police, following the Citizenship Amendment Act, Tanha, Kalita, and Narwal, along with other accused persons, conspired to disrupt such an extent and such a magnitude at the national capital that would lead to disorderliness and disturbance of law and order at an unprecedented scale.
