Kenyan, 30 March: Sarah Onyango Obama, a Kenyan educator and philanthropist and the grandmother of former U.S President Barack Obama was laid to rest. She was 99.
Sarah Onyango Obama born in 1922, was a Kenyan educator and philanthropist. She was the third wife of the paternal grandfather of U.S. president Barack Obama. She was fondly known by her short name as Sarah Obama; sometimes referred to as Sarah Ogwel, Sarah Hussein Obama, or Sarah Anyango Obama. She lived in Nyang’oma Kogelo village, 48 km (30 miles) west of western Kenya’s main city, Kisumu, on the edge of Lake Victoria.
Sarah Onyango Obama, the step grandmother of former President Barack Obama who grew up without formal education in rural Kenya and devoted many of her later years to philanthropic efforts to help young Kenyans find places in school, died on Monday in Kisumu, a city in the western part of the country and buried there.
