Causes and Symptoms of Black Fungus (Mucormycosis) : Dr Guleria, AIIMS Chief

Persistent Headache, Swelling in Covid Survivors Signs of Black Fungus”: Dr Guleria, AIIMS Chief

New Delhi: Patients recovering from COVID-19 and can’t get rid of that persistent headache or that swelling on one side of the face, are advised to immediately consult to a doctor and get tested for Black Fungus.

Dr Randeep Guleria chief of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi further said, do the same if you find discolouration in the mouth and decreased sensation in any part of the face.

Accroding to Dr Guleria, despite it not being contagious more cases of Black Fungus were being reported in India, because of a large diabetic population and the uncontrolled use of steroids.

Mucormycosis cases came up in the first wave, too, although the number is greater during the second wave due to the excessive use of steroids, Dr Guleria further added.

According to Dr Guleria,  the cause behind Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) are…

  • High Doses of Steriods for long period of time, with predisposing conditions like diabetes may lead to fungal infection.
  • Early use of steroids might lead tos secondary infections, both bacterial and fungal.
  • Mucromycosis is predominantly involves the sinuses, the eye and at times it can go on to brain.
