New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has canceled the UGC-NET exam, which was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) just a day after it was held, due to concerns about the integrity of the exam being compromised. This decision comes amidst ongoing controversy over the NEET exam. Over 9 lakh candidates appeared for the UGC-NET, which determines eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and junior research fellowships.
The cancellation was triggered by inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit, indicating potential compromises in the exam’s integrity. Although there were reports of a paper leak, the ministry has not confirmed these, stating only that the matter is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the government for its “laxity” and called for accountability. The Ministry of Education emphasized that the cancellation was necessary to maintain the transparency and sanctity of the exam process. A new date for the rescheduled exam will be announced later.
Previously, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar had reported the successful conduct of the exam in 83 subjects across 1,205 centers in 317 cities, with 81% of the registered candidates appearing.
Simultaneously, the NEET-UG 2024 exam, taken by nearly 24 lakh students, has faced allegations of question paper leaks and the granting of grace marks, leading to protests and court cases, including scrutiny from the Supreme Court
