Hyderabad: On July 8, the Hyderabad Traffic Police registered 1,007 cases against vehicle owners for using illegal black-tinted glasses and films. The offenders were fined up to Rs. 1000 under CMV Rule 100 and Sections 177 and 179(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. This enforcement action addresses concerns that opaque windows contribute to accidents and traffic infractions, and facilitate criminal activities.

- Legal Requirements: According to the Supreme Court of India and Central Motor Vehicle Rule 100, vehicles must have at least 70% visual light transmission for front and rear windshields and no less than 50% for side windows. Black films are strictly prohibited.
- Safety Risks: Tinted glasses obstruct peripheral views, posing road safety risks.
- Additional Devices: Sunshades, curtains, and retractable black screens are also subject to regulation.
- Awareness Issues: There is a significant lack of awareness among vehicle owners, and some car accessory shops are illegally installing black film.
- Public Participation: Citizens are urged to report violations via Facebook, Twitter, and a dedicated Traffic Help Line (9010203626).
