Top Seer at Kumbh Mela in Haridwar Dies of COVID19, 80 More Seer Tested Positive

Earlier this week, Mahamandaleshwar Kapil Dev Das, 65, head of one of the Hindu Akhadas (ascetic councils) was admitted to hospital and died from coronavirus on Thursday.

Haridwar, 16 April: A top Seer has died from COVID-19 and 80 other Seers have tested positive in Kumbh mela after attending religious festival where millions of devotees have been ignoring Covid-19 advice despite a national surge in infections.

Earlier this week, Mahamandaleshwar Kapil Dev Das, 65, head of one of the Hindu Akhadas (ascetic councils) was admitted to hospital and died from coronavirus on Thursday.

The massive crowds of devotees including cannabis, smoking holy men with dreadlocks, taking a dip in the ganga river have mostly ignored covid guidelines of maintain distancing etc.

Harbeer Singh, a top festival officer told media, “We had around 2,000 positive cases since Monday during random testing of pilgrims at the Kumbh,”

The Uttarakhand government has exempted the event from restrictions limiting gatherings to 200 people and CM Tirath Singh Rawat said in early April that no devotees would be “unnecessarily harassed in the name of Covid-19 restrictions.
