Telangana High Court Acquits Man: Convicted in Mother’s Murder Case Due to Hostile Evidence

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court acquitted Eddagundela Pochaiah, who was previously found guilty of murdering his mother, due to hostile evidence. The court emphasized that criminal convictions must be based on solid evidence, not assumptions, especially in murder cases where the penalty is life imprisonment.

Justice K. Surender reviewed Pochaiah’s appeal against his life sentence by the VI Additional District and Sessions Judge at Siddipet. The prosecution alleged that Pochaiah had tried to disguise the murder as a suicide. However, during the trial, both the complainant and key witnesses recanted their statements, and the complainant even denied filing the complaint. The trial court had convicted Pochaiah based primarily on the testimony of the post-mortem doctor and the investigating officer. The doctor, however, could not definitively state whether the death was homicidal or suicidal.

Given the lack of eyewitnesses and the hostile witnesses, the High Court ruled in favor of Pochaiah, leading to his acquittal.
