Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to issue new ration cards after a decade-long gap. Food and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy will lead a Cabinet sub-committee to determine the eligibility criteria and procedures for issuing these new food security (ration) and health cards. The committee includes ministers Damodar Rajanarsimha and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, with the Principal Secretary of the Consumer Affairs, Food, and Civil Supplies Department serving as the convener.
Under the previous BRS government, no ration cards were issued for ten years, and updates such as adding or removing names were not allowed. This left many families, especially newly married couples, without access to ration cards and related government schemes. The BRS government only issued a limited number of cards during by-elections in specific constituencies.
