At least 28 Killed, 70 Injured in Stampede at Israel Pilgrimage Site

Jerusalem: At least 28 people have been killed in a stampede at a Jewish pilgrimage site in the north of Israel on Friday, rescue services said.

The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of mainly ultra-Orthodox Jews were participating in an annual pilgrimage for the feast of Lag BaOmer, in Meron, around the reputed tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a second-century Talmudic sage.

According to Magen David Adom (MDA), the Israeli emergency service, said at least 50 people had been injured at the gathering, 20 of them critically. And “MDA is fighting for the lives of dozens wounded, and will not give up until the last victim is evacuated.”

The injuries were the result of overcrowding and not caused by the collapse of any structure at the site, the spokesman, Zaki Heller said, rebutting initial reports that staging had collapsed.

In addition to MDA ambulances, six helicopters were used to transfer the wounded to hospitals, Heller said.

Israeli media published an image of a row of bodies covered in plastic bags on the ground.
