RAGGING IS A CRIME : Cyberabad Police Urges Stronger Anti-Ragging Committees in Colleges and Institutes

Hyderabad: As the new academic year begins in Telangana, the Cyberabad police have issued an advisory to educational institutions, urging them to reinforce their Anti-Ragging Committees. The committees, which should include the principal, professors, wardens, parents, and students, are tasked with preventing ragging on campus. The police emphasized the importance of close coordination with student union leaders and suggested that institutions display anti-ragging posters prominently.

The advisory reminds institutions and students that ragging is a serious offense under the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997. Violators could face imprisonment ranging from six months to ten years, depending on the severity of the offense. Additionally, students convicted under this act will be dismissed from their institutions and may be barred from future admissions.

The police encourage students to report any ragging incidents by contacting their nearest police station or dialing 100 for assistance.

Cyberabad Police issues a Public Notice as follows:

#RAGGING IS A CRIME! Do not engage in it or support it. For any assistance or to report incidents of Ragging, please contact your nearest police station or #DIAL100

PUBLIC NOTE

Cyberabad Police Enforces Strict Anti-Ragging Measures As the new academic year has begun, students across various educational institutions embark on a journey filled with hope, aspirations, and opportunities. Unfortunately, in certain instances, some senior students may attempt to abuse, humiliate, or harass new entrants in the name of ragging. The Cyberabad Police would like to remind all students and educational institutions that ragging, in any form, is strictly prohibited both within and outside educational institutions. Under the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act, of 1997, ragging is a serious and punishable offence. Section 4 of the Act states that any individual who engages in or abets ragging, with the intent or knowledge of causing harm, shall face imprisonment ranging from six months to ten years, depending on the severity of the offense. Furthermore, any student convicted and imprisoned under Section 4 of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, will be dismissed from their educational institution. In cases where the imprisonment exceeds six months, the convicted student will be barred from admission to any other educational institution.

The Cyberabad Police urges the Principals of all educational institutions to take proactive steps in preventing ragging. It is requested that ‘Anti-Ragging Committees’ be constituted, comprising the Principal, professors, wardens, parents, and students. These committees should work in close coordination with student union leaders to foster a ragging-free environment. Additionally, educational institutions are encouraged to display posters highlighting anti-ragging laws at prominent locations within and around the campus. The Cyberabad Police is actively conducting awareness programs on Anti-Ragging in various educational institutions to eradicate this social evil. We stand committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for every student.

For any assistance or to report incidents of ragging, please contact your nearest police station or dial 100.
