Pregnant Woman Forced to Walk 3 KM for No Helmet, Cop Suspended in Odisha

Odisha, 30 March: A Sub Inspector has been suspended on charges of misconduct and dereliction of duty for allegedly forcing a pregnant woman to walk 3 kilometers to police station during a helmet-checking drive by the district Superintendent of police.

Reena Baxal, SI, Sarat Police Station in Mayurbhanj District, was suspended with immediate effect from March 28.

The action was taken after a pregnant woman and her husband accused the cop of torturing her.

The pregnant woman, Gurubari, was going to hospital for a routine medical check-up with her husband Bikram Biruli on a bike when they were stopped by police. Husband Bikram was wearing a helmet, but wife Gurubari was not.

Cop allegedly did not pay heed of the health conditions and fined of ₹ 500 and forced Bikram to go to police station to pay the fine, leaving his wife at the spot. However, the pregnant woman also made a grueling three-kilometer journey on foot in the scorching heat with her husband to pay the fine.
