Madhya Pradesh: Over 31,000 women and girls have been reported missing from 2021 to 2024, according to official data presented in the state assembly. This includes 28,857 women and 2,944 girls. However, only 724 cases have been officially registered.
Bhopal and other districts show significant discrepancies between reported and registered cases. Ujjain reported 676 missing women over the past 34 months without a single case registered. Similarly, in Indore, 2,384 women are missing, with only 16 cases registered despite 479 women missing for over a month. Sagar district reported the highest number of missing girls at 245 cases.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report of 2023 indicates that between 2019 and 2021, more than 1.3 million women and girls went missing in India, with Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal having the highest numbers. In Madhya Pradesh, 1,60,180 women and 38,234 girls were reported missing during this period.
The government has implemented measures like The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, and the Emergency Response Support System (112) for the safety of women. Despite these efforts, the substantial number of unregistered cases highlights ongoing issues with reporting and trust in law enforcement in Madhya Pradesh.
