No One Killed Ishrat Jahan? All Police Officers Accused in Fake Encounter, Discharged from the Cases.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 31 March: A special CBI court judge Vipul R. Raval in Ahmedabad today, discharged the remaining three accused police officers in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case.

Today remaining three police officers who were accused of alleged fake encounter were G.L. Singhal (Inspector General of Police) Tarun Barot and Anaju Chaudhary were discharged from the case.

Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old woman from Mumbai, was killed along with Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Rana and Zeeshan Johar by Gujarat police in an ‘encounter’ near Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

A magisterial enquiry, SIT probe and CBI investigation subsequently all concluded that this was a fake encounter – that the police claim of having fired on Ishrat Jahan and others in ‘self-defense’ was a lie.

The CBI booked seven police officers (listed below) as accused in its first charge sheet filed in 2013. In 2017, The case was registered against them for the offence punishable under sections 121(B) read with sections 341, 342, 343, 365/, 368, 312 and 211 of the Indian Penal Code and section 25/(1)(e) and 27 of the Indian Arms Act.

P.P. Pandey, (former in-charge Director General of Police) discharged from the case. Earlier, he was reinstated by Gujrat police as soon as he was released on bail.
