Hyderabad: A journalist in Hyderabad, named Revathi, has been booked for tweeting about power cuts in the city. The incident began when Revathi, through her Twitter handle “@revathitweets,” posted about prolonged power outages five days prior. The tweet gained significant attention, leading to a complaint by Dileep, the Assistant Engineer of the Autonagar Section from TGSPDCL (Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited), who alleged that the tweet contained false allegations aimed at defaming the State government and TGSPDCL.
The complaint resulted in the registration of a case at L B Nagar police station, where the police invoked Sections 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66 (D) of the Information Technology (IT) Act to investigate the matter. In response to the FIR, Revathi tweeted, referring to it as her “Medal of Honor” and criticized the action, highlighting that the real culprits, whom she accused of harassing a female consumer, remained free.
This case highlights the ongoing tensions between citizens’ use of social media to express grievances and government responses to such criticisms.
