Hyderabad-based IRS Officer Gets Name, Gender Changed In Official Records

Hyderabad: In a historic move, the Ministry of Finance has approved the request of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer to change both name and gender in official records. This marks the first instance of such a change in the Indian civil services.

The officer, originally known as Ms. M Anusuya, is now officially recognized as Mr. M Anukathir Surya. Mr. Surya, aged 35, serves as a Joint Commissioner at the Customs Excise & Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) in Hyderabad. He began his IRS career as an Assistant Commissioner in Chennai in 2013, was promoted to Deputy Commissioner in 2018, and assumed his current role in Hyderabad in 2023.

Mr. Surya’s academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication from the Madras Institute of Technology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Cyber Law and Cyber Forensics from the National Law Institute University, completed in 2023.
