Hyderabad Man Escapes From Cybercrime Racket in Cambodia

Hyderabad: A 29-year-old man from Hyderabad, Gulam Moinuddin, was lured into a cybercrime operation in Cambodia under the guise of a job opportunity but managed to escape and return to India. Gulam, a resident of Kurmaguda, Madannapet, initially worked as a waiter in Hyderabad and sought better job prospects abroad due to financial struggles. A friend connected him with an agent, Gottapu Srinivasa Rao, who offered him a job in Cambodia. After paying Rs 50,000 and additional expenses, Gulam traveled to Cambodia on January 20, 2024.

Upon arrival, his passport was taken, and he was driven to Poi Pet City near the Thailand border. There, he realized the job involved scamming Indians through a call center run by Chinese handlers. When Gulam refused to participate, he was threatened and demanded to pay double the initial amount. He was kept idle for 20 days before being moved to another company to continue the scam.

Gulam sought help from the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh, where Indian Ambassador Devyani Uttam Khobragade assisted him in obtaining a new passport and ensured his safe return to India on August 7. On his return to Hyderabad, he filed a complaint with the Telangana police, who registered a case of wrongful confinement and initiated an investigation.
