Hyderabad – High Court Issues Stay Orders on Musi River Evictions

Hyderabad: In Hyderabad, over 100 homeowners have secured stay orders from the Telangana High Court to temporarily halt evictions tied to the Musi River rejuvenation project. This effort by the state government aims to clear encroachments along the Musi River, focusing on areas like Chaitanyapuri, Phanigiri Colony, Satyanagar, and Kothapet. Homeowners in these areas have put up notices on their walls indicating their legal protection against demolition.

The eviction drive primarily affects underprivileged residents living along the riverbanks, many of whom have already been removed and relocated to government-built 2BHK flats. However, wealthier homeowners, able to afford legal representation, have managed to delay the process through court stays.

The government’s actions, led by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA), have caused tensions in the city. While the move has garnered praise from some activists for addressing illegal encroachments, it has also faced opposition. Over the past month, HYDRA has also been targeting illegal structures around city lakes.

In response to the public outcry, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao announced on October 3 that the party’s legal team would offer assistance to those affected by the evictions. Residents facing demolition due to the Musi Riverfront Development project can approach the BRS for legal support.
