Hamas Names Yahya Sinwar as New Leader After Ismail Haniyeh’s Assassination

Hamas has named Yahya Sinwar as the new leader of its political bureau following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Sinwar’s selection highlights the importance of Gaza within Hamas. Sinwar, seen by Israel as the architect of the October 7 attack that killed over 1,100 people and resulted in the capture of more than 200 others, now leads the group amid Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties and displacement. Haniyeh’s assassination, likely by Israel, disrupted ceasefire negotiations and reinforced Gaza’s centrality in Hamas’ political strategy.

Yahya Sinwar is a prominent Palestinian political and military leader, associated with Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organization. Born in 1962 in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, Sinwar has been a significant figure within Hamas for many years. He was one of the founders of the al-Majd intelligence service, the internal security arm of Hamas.

Sinwar was imprisoned by Israel in 1988 for his involvement in terrorist activities but was released in 2011 as part of the prisoner exchange deal for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. After his release, he quickly rose to prominence within Hamas, and in February 2017, he was elected as the head of the Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip. This position made him one of the most powerful leaders in Gaza, with significant influence over both the political and military wings of the organization.

Sinwar is known for his hardline stance against Israel and has played a crucial role in shaping the group’s policies and strategies in its conflict with Israel. His leadership has been marked by efforts to strengthen Hamas’ military capabilities and governance structures in Gaza.
