Government Proposed 1500 Crore for Musi Riverfront Development

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has proposed allocating Rs 1,500 crore for the Musi riverfront development project in its 2024-25 budget, presented by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.

The project aims to revive the ecosystem around the Musi River and enhance 110 km of urban areas in and around Hyderabad. Planned developments include recreation zones, plazas, children’s theme parks, and entertainment areas. The initiative seeks to establish an economic zone, improve living standards, protect heritage and culture, enhance the city’s image, and improve infrastructure.

A socio-economic survey by 33 teams from the revenue department has already been conducted. The development will follow the model of London’s Thames Riverfront Project, with hopes of setting a replicable example across India. Despite the state’s request for Rs 10,000 crore from the central government, no specific allocation was made in the union budget.

Last year’s state budget initially allocated Rs 200 crore for the project, later revised to Rs 50 crore.

The Musi River is a major river in the Indian state of Telangana, flowing through its capital city, Hyderabad. Originating from the Ananthagiri Hills near Vikarabad, the river stretches over 240 km before merging with the Krishna River. Historically, the Musi River played a crucial role in the development of Hyderabad, providing water and serving as a natural landmark.

Key Points About the Musi River:

  1. Historical Significance: The Musi River has been central to Hyderabad’s history and development. The city was founded on its banks by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. It was once a clean and vital water source for the city.
  2. Environmental Concerns: Over the years, rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to severe pollution of the Musi River. Untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and encroachments have degraded the river’s water quality, impacting both the ecosystem and the health of residents.
  3. Revival Efforts: There have been several attempts to clean and rejuvenate the Musi River. The recent allocation of Rs 1,500 crore by the Telangana government for the Musi riverfront development project aims to revive the river’s ecosystem, enhance urban areas along its banks, and create recreational zones, theme parks, and economic hubs.
  4. Future Plans: Inspired by the Thames Riverfront Project in London, the development plans for the Musi River include establishing economic zones, improving living standards, protecting heritage and culture, and enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The state government has conducted a socio-economic survey to support these goals.
  5. Challenges: Despite the state’s efforts and budget allocations, significant challenges remain, including the need for central government support, effective pollution control measures, and sustainable urban planning to ensure the river’s long-term health and vitality.

The Musi River’s revival is seen as a landmark project for Hyderabad, with the potential to serve as a model for other riverfront development projects across India.
