Government Plans to Divide GHMC into Four Corporations Amid Growing Population

Hyderabad: The government is considering splitting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into four corporations due to the city’s growing population, which has reached nearly 1.5 crore. This proposal was announced by Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy at the Urban Infrastructure Summit – 2024, suggesting there would be four mayors after the upcoming elections. The GHMC was initially formed in 2007 by merging 12 municipalities and later divided into six zones.

Additionally, the minister criticized the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for opposing the Musi Riverfront Development project, which aims to address pollution caused by untreated waste from pharma companies.

Criticism of BRS: Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy accused the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of politicizing the Musi Riverfront Development project. The BRS secured a loan of Rs. 1,000 crore for cleaning the river, but now opposes the project after losing power.

Musi Riverfront Project: The project aims to address health issues in Nalgonda and Rangareddy caused by untreated pharma waste in the Musi River. A delegation will visit South Korea for riverfront development studies.

Regional Ring Road (RRR) Project: Tenders for the Rs. 28,000 crore project, covering nearly 50% of Telangana, will be floated in November. The project is funded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
